Description
These photographs were taken at the Lower Antelope Canyon in Northern Arizona in 2012. As I climbed down into the slot canyon, it soon became clear why it is such a popular destination for photographers. As the sun’s ambient light filtered into the canyon, it created a breath-taking visual experience. Ordinary red sandstone was transformed into an amazing color palette, dominated by glowing yellow-orange highlights and rich, deep violet shadows.
Embraced by such dramatic light, the canyon is a very peaceful, spiritual place. Inspired and in awe of its natural beauty, I began looking for simple, abstract forms and started exploring relationships of objects within a frame. Soon, the abstract qualities of light and shapes began to feed my muse and I was no longer concerned with portraying truth or reality.
Much like the Abstract Expressionists, who took subjects out of context, I used anti-figurative compositions to communicate my vision. The goal was to invite the viewer to explore their emotional response to the images. Ultimately, each person’s response may be different. This is the true beauty of Antelope Light.
